For those like me who find Windows 7 adequate for what we want to do ...
You've probably noticed that Microsoft Security Essentials is no longer automatically updating. Clicking the 'update definitions' button results in failure. The good news is that, at the time of writing, Microsoft is still making available security updates. These must be downloaded manually. Here's what to do:
1/ Go to the Microsoft Security Intelligence updates page here. (Opens in new tab)
2/ Scroll to the download options and click the version of Microsoft Security Essentials appropriate to your machine. (Control Panel - System Information will show whether you have a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 7.)
3/ Download the appropriate .exe file.
4/ Trust the publisher and run the .exe file you've just downloaded.
5/ Launch Microsoft Security Essentials, and click to update definitions. This should now work, and you'll see that the latest virus definitions have been applied.
